Psyllium Husk: The Indian Botanical Behind the Global Fibre Boom

Few commodities are as quietly dominated by a single origin as psyllium. The husk of Plantago ovata — the soluble fibre inside supplements, functional foods, gluten-free bakery and pharmaceutical laxatives worldwide — comes overwhelmingly from India, where the arid districts of North Gujarat and Rajasthan provide the exact growing conditions the crop demands. For most buyers, there simply is no meaningful alternative origin at scale.

The crop is winter-sown and harvested from March, after which seed moves to milling units concentrated around Unjha and Sidhpur in Gujarat. Milling separates the husk from the seed in successive passes; the more passes and cleaning stages, the higher the purity. This is where the familiar grades come from: 85%, 95% and 99% husk purity, plus 40-mesh powder milled from husk for applications needing faster dispersion.

For regulated markets, three specifications deserve the most attention. Swell volume — the millilitres of gel one gram of husk produces — is the functional heart of the product; pharmaceutical and premium supplement buyers typically require 40 ml/g or better, which in practice means 99% grade. Microbiology matters because psyllium is often consumed without a kill step: ask how lots are treated (steam sterilisation is increasingly preferred over ETO, which faces restrictions in the EU) and require per-lot certificates. Finally, pesticide residues — reputable exporters test against destination MRLs and share reports before shipment, not after.

Commercially, psyllium is a crop with real seasonality: prices are set substantially by the March–April harvest and the acreage decisions made months earlier, so serious buyers often contract annual volumes shortly after the new crop arrives, when quality is verifiable and availability is at its peak.

Global Rootary supplies 85%, 95% and 99% psyllium husk and 40-mesh powder from established Gujarat milling units, with full certificates of analysis, USP/EP-aligned specifications on request, and steam-sterilised options for North American and European buyers. If fibre is in your product pipeline, we are glad to send graded samples for your lab.
